Your product toolkit for frizzy hair

If you have naturally frizzy hair, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. The slightest hint of moisture in the air and your carefully styled look gets a mind of its own. Even when the sun’s shining, it can have a tendency to be coarse, brittle and hard to manage.

Thankfully, there are ways to support your hair to be as healthy-looking as possible and to protect against the causes of excessive frizz. In this article, we’ll look at the best frizzy hair products - including the Essential Haircare LOVE SMOOTHING/ range - plus frizz control tools and techniques you can use to create the smooth, stylish look you want.

The science of frizzy hair

Frizz happens when moisture from the air penetrates the hair’s cuticle - the overlapping layer of scales that cover each hair shaft - causing the hair to swell and loose its defined shape. This change in shape impacts how light is reflected off the hair, which is why frizzy hair can appear dull.

Your hair will be more prone to frizzing if it’s naturally porous, if you have low levels of natural lipids, or if your hair is curly or coily, as this type of hair is more likely to swell unevenly.

Common frizz culprits

Although genetic factors play their part in whether or not you have frizzy hair, there are external factors that can make it worse.

For example, hair that has been damaged is much more likely to appear frizzy. Heat and harsh chemicals can damage the hair’s cuticle, making it easier for moisture to penetrate. Likewise, you can cause damage by towel drying hair too aggressively or overbrushing, both of which impact the cuticle.

All of these factors mean that when the air is full of moisture - be it because it’s hot and humid or gloomy and drizzling - your hair doesn’t have the resources to keep its shape and ends up frizzy.

The anti-frizz power duo

The first tool in your frizz-fighting product toolkit should be a double act - a shampoo and a conditioner for frizzy hair.

Anti-frizz shampoos and conditioners work by cleansing the hair gently so as not to strip away its natural oils or lift the cuticles, while adding moisture to provide initial hydration. Although it might seem counter intuitive to add moisture, doing so means the hair is less likely to attract ambient moisture from the air.

Many anti-frizz shampoos and conditioners also contain smoothing agents that lightly coat the hair and help the cuticle scales to lie flat. This anti-humidity action reduces the hair’s porosity and makes it less susceptible to moisture penetration and frizz.

Our LOVE SMOOTHING/ range contains Regenerative Organic Certified™ Apple pulp extract¹ from Mr. Francesco Querzola's farm, Borgo Val di Taro, Parma, Italy. This active ingredient contains carbohydrates that lock in moisture and smooth hair as well as antioxidants that protect. The result is hair that looks shinier and is more manageable.

Essential leave-in anti-frizz treatments

Having covered the basics, the next step is to add a leave-in anti-frizz treatment such as a cream, serum or spray. These smoothing products for frizzy hair give the hair an extra, lasting boost of protection after the hair is washed, filling gaps and forming a film that seals the cuticle.

As well as the fast acting LOVE SMOOTHING/ mask, we’ve added two new leave-in products to our anti-frizz line - a lightweight milk and a serum - both of which offer up to 72 hours² of frizz control and heat protection up to 230°C (446°F).

LOVE SMOOTHING/ lightweight milk is ideal for fine and medium frizzy hair, offering long-lasting frizz control without weighing the hair down. Just one use makes hair up to 3.9 times smoother³ and up to 2.5 times times shinier⁴.

For thicker or coarser frizzy hair, try LOVE SMOOTHING/ serum, which locks in moisture to make hair up to 10 times more hydrated⁵ and up to 2.4 times smoother after one use⁶ - perfect for taming flyaways and managing unruly strands.

Styling tools and techniques to smooth frizzy hair

If you’re prone to frizzy hair, a microfibre towel is a good investment. Made of tiny fibres, they are softer than standard towels, creating less friction and reducing stress on the hair. Wrapping your hair in a microfibre towel for a few minutes also helps it to stay hydrated by stopping it from drying too quickly.

Another good buy is an ionic blowdryer. These clever products use negatively charged ions to break up clusters of water droplets so that they evaporate more quickly and evenly, reducing the amount of time you need to spend heat treating your hair. They also neutralise static electricity and help seal the cuticle.

Combined with gentle brushing and heat protecting products such as LOVE SMOOTHING/ serum or LOVE SMOOTHING/ lightweight milk, using these products will leave your hair healthier-looking, smoother and less frizzy.

Quick fixes for on-the-go frizz

If you’re faced with a frizz emergency when you’re out and about, don’t panic - there are solutions you can use on the go to get you through.

Try smoothing a touch up product such as a light oil or serum through your hair, either with your fingers or with a soft-bristle brush - it’s best to avoid plastic as that can generate static, which worsens frizz.

Another option is to style your hair with clips, scrunchies or headbands to hold your hair in place. Choosing satin or silk products reduces friction, which will stop new frizz from forming.

While it may not be possible to change your hair’s natural tendencies, by understanding what causes frizz and how to handle it, you can ensure that your hair becomes more manageable. With consistent care and the right products and strategies, beautiful, frizz-free hair isn’t just a dream, it’s an achievable reality for everyone.
