FAQs

What causes split ends?

Split ends can be caused by routine heat styling, chemical treatments, harsh shampoos, over-washing hair, diet, and rough or tight hairstyles. Certain environments like dry air, lots of sun exposure, and air pollution can also affect hair health and cause split ends. Hair that stays dry for too long is more likely to develop split ends and hair that is finer in texture is also more prone to split ends.

How can I prevent split ends?

You can prevent split ends by using heat protectant spray when flat ironing or blow-drying hair, using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners for gentle cleansing, and split-end serums to seal the hair at the ends. Getting regular haircuts and hair trims is also important to prevent long-term damage and further breakage. Lastly, using a delicate hand when brushing and styling hair can also prevent split ends. Choosing styles that aren't as tight and don’t tug or pull on the hair will help in preventing breakage long term.

Can split ends be repaired?

Split ends can only truly be repaired by trimming off the split hair strands. If you are in between trims, use a hair serum, hair mask, leave-in conditioner, or reparative hair oils to conceal and in some cases temporarily bind the hair shaft together. While these treatments won't fully repair split ends, they can be used to stretch out trims and offer moisturizing benefits.

How often should I trim my hair to avoid split ends?

The best practice is to get a hair trim every 6-8 weeks to keep hair at optimal health and prevent more breakage. Going long periods of time without a hair trim causes the hair to split further up the hair shaft which can cause the hair to break off, become more dry, and look less healthy. If hair is finer in texture or chemically treated, a trim may be required more often.

What do split ends look like?

Split ends are often characterized by a ‘Y’ or ‘V’ shape at the end of the hair strand where the hair has split in two. The ends can also appear frayed, weak, brittle, and more frizzy. Hair may also feel rougher to the touch and not be as soft. Split-ends can cause hair to lose elasticity, strength, and bounce. Noticing any of these factors is a good indication that you may be suffering from split ends.
