How to Do a Hot Oil Treatment for Your Hair
1. Select a Nourishing Oil for Your Hair Type
- Jojoba Oil: Closely mimics the scalp’s natural sebum, making it excellent for restoring balance and soothing dryness.
- Argan Oil: Rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, this is a favorite for natural hair. It helps reduce frizz, add shine, and protect against breakage.
- Moringa Oil: Packed with amino acids and vitamins A and C, moringa oil helps strengthen the hair shaft and encourage healthy growth.
- Avocado Oil: Contains monounsaturated fats and biotin, which deeply moisturize dry hair and improve elasticity.
- Coconut Oil: A multitasking hero that penetrates the hair shaft to reduce protein loss. Great for all hair types, especially when used regularly to support growth and hydration.
- Sesame Oil: Known for its scalp-soothing properties and UV protection, sesame oil also helps lock in moisture and boost shine.
- Olive Oil: Loaded with vitamin E and fatty acids, olive oil strengthens hair, seals in hydration, and smooths the cuticle, making it ideal for damaged or brittle strands.
2. Heat the Oil Using a Double Boiler
- Measure the oil: Pour 2-3 tablespoons of your chosen oil into a heat-safe glass or stainless steel bowl.
- Set up a double boiler: Fill a medium to large pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a gentle boil over high heat.
- Warm the oil: Carefully place your bowl into the pot, resting it above the water without letting it touch the bottom. Stir the oil occasionally and allow it to warm for 2-3 minutes, or until it feels comfortably warm to the touch.
3. Separate Your Hair into Four Sections
- Brush out your hair and split it vertically down the middle, creating two equal sections on either side of your head.
- Split those sections into two more to make them a little smaller.
- Clip all the sections up with a claw clip, except one, to keep them out of the way.
4. Massage the Oil into Your Roots and Scalp
5. Drag the Oil Down Through the Ends of Your Hair
6. Cover Your Hair With a Shower Cap for 30 Minutes
7. Shampoo and Condition Your Hair
8. Repeat As Needed Based on Hair Type
