What makes a good detangling product?

Effective detanglers contain slip-enhancing ingredients like silicones, oils, and hydrolyzed proteins which help minimize friction and ease knots apart. Look for smoothing and anti-static properties as well. Ultimately, the best detangling products should be multi-use.

Why is it important to detangle hair gently?

Rough or forced detangling (like yanking a brush through the hair) causes friction, leading to cuticle damage, split ends, frizz, and breakage. Especially when hair follicles have already been weakened by excessive chemical or heat damage, forcible detangling can cause avoidable hair loss and reduce healthy growth. When and how should I use a detangling product?

Before using a post-cleanse detangling product, wash with one of our detangling sulfate-free shampoos and a detangling nourishing conditioner to set your strands up for success. Removing products with a clarifying shampoo also allows your hair to return to its natural state, reducing the risk of snags, snares, and split ends. After washing and conditioning, use a smoothing detangler on damp, freshly washed hair before combing or brushing out tangles. It can also be used as a leave-in to prevent knots throughout the day. Can detangling products help with more than just detangling?
